A Reprise of Two Themes

چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to respond to D. Elkind’s (1985, Developmental Review, 5, 218-226) reply to D. Lapsley and M. Murphy’s (1985, Developmental Review, 5,201-217) critique of the adolescent egocentrism theory. After a reprise of the issues in contention, we address the problem of theoretical consistency and self-other differentiation in Dr. Elkind’s (1967, Chi/d Development, 38, 102.5-1034) theory. The role of formal operations in the Lapsley and Murphy (1985) account of the imaginary audience and personal fable is revised, and the empirical support for Elkind’s theory is reviewed. We conclude that there are good conceptual and empirical grounds for doubting the major assumptions of the adolescent egocentrism theory, and that the Lapsley and Murphy (1985) framework has promise in suggesting theoretical integration with other approaches to the self. The Performance of Consistent Checkpointing in Distributed Shared Memory Systems Gilbert Cabillic, Gilles Muller, Isabelle Puaut
This paper presents the design and implementation of a consistent check-pointing mechanism for Distributed Shared Memory (dsm) systems. Our approach relies on the integration of checkpoints within synchronization barriers already existing in applications, which avoids the introduction of an additional synchronization mechanism. The main advantage of our checkpointing mechanism is that performan...
متن کاملWiley-Liss Plenary Symposium Evolutionary Perspectives on the Fetal Origins Hypothesis
The fetal origins hypothesis, or Barker hypothesis, is both stimulating and challenging for evolutionary human biologists. While evidence of a correlation between conditions around the time of birth and later health outcomes has been presented before, the more recent evidence of a connection between fetal growth and chronic disease risk later in life has attracted considerable attention among e...
متن کاملClarification and generalized quantifiers
We attempt to show that a classical concern of formal semantics, quantification, interacts in an interesting way with dialogue strategies when viewed from the perspective of our approach to semantics using Type Theory with Records (TTR). TTR analyzes semantic content in terms of structured semantic objects containing subcomponents and we argue that these components influence what a dialogue par...
متن کاملRepresenting Semantically Analyzed C++ Code with Reprise
A prominent stumbling block in the spread of the C++ programming language has been a lack of programming and analysis tools to aid development and maintenance of C++ systems. One way to make the job of tool developers easier and to increase the quality of the tools they create is to factor out the common components of tools and provide the components as easily (re)used building blocks. Those bu...
